Welcome to Analytical Reads.
My journey in chemistry began in Sri Lanka, where I earned my Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the Institute of Chemistry, Ceylon, in 2018. During and following my undergraduate studies, I was involved in research projects investigating the anti-tyrosinase potential of king coconut kernel, a fruit native to Sri Lanka, and the development of a biochar-modified carbon paste electrode to determine the efficiency in detecting potassium ferricyanide in wastewater. These early experiences sparked my fascination with scientific inquiry and the application of chemistry to solve real-world problems.
Following graduation, I completed an industrial internship at Ansell, conducting projects aimed at optimizing the latex glove manufacturing processes. My work included developing glove-release formulations, pigment formulations, and evaluating water quality parameters to assess the feasibility of water recirculation within the production line. These experiences strengthened my analytical thinking and provided valuable insight into the translation of scientific principles into industrial applications.
I later served as a Teaching Assistant in Organic Chemistry at the Open University of Sri Lanka, where I imparted my acquired knowledge and expertise, guiding undergraduate students through laboratory experiments and study workshops. Teaching allowed me to share my passion for chemistry while refining my ability to communicate complex scientific concepts in an accessible manner.
My academic journey continued at the University of Tennessee, where I earned a Master's degree in Chemistry. There, I expanded my expertise in organic synthesis, biochemical assay development, and bioanalytical techniques through research conducted on the synthesis and evaluation of cell-permeant isopentenyl diphosphate isomerase inhibitors. This work introduced me to the challenges associated with prodrug design, cell permeability, compound purification, and characterization.
Today, in my current role as an Associate Scientist at a contract research organization (CRO), I support method development, sample analysis, and bioanalytical studies for a variety of therapeutic agents across preclinical and clinical stages of the drug development pipeline. This experience enriches me daily with opportunities to assist in troubleshooting analytical challenges, method optimization, and LC-MS/MS analysis, and maintaining rigorous scientific documentation. Each project provides a unique opportunity to better understand how therapeutic agents are developed, evaluated, and ultimately translated into meaningful treatments.
My curiosity has always extended beyond experimental results. I am fascinated by the challenges encountered during drug discovery, the historical evolution of optimization strategies, and the innovative technologies that continue to transform therapeutic development. The desire to explore these questions and educate you alongside me through scientifically grounded discussions is what inspired the creation of Analytical Reads.
